1841 census
I was looking in the 1841 census to see if I could find my relatives using a list of family, friends and neighbors. It appears that the list of people on the census all lived in one dwelling and weren't related to everyone in the dwelling. Did they list everyone in a building not just family groups with different areas in the building?

You might find a ditto symbol (usually shown as do.) by the name of the head of the household in the 1841 census returns for Scotland (as well as England & Wales) but, no, there was no formal breaking down into households, as found in subsequent censuses (1851, 1861, etc.).
In the examples I have just checked, it is a whole village that is shown in this way (i.e., no split between families) not just a building.

Here is 1841 census page for Whitburn in West Lothian, houses were listed as inhabited with a no.1 etc.
