Alice Castle's (1886–1955) origins?
1886–1955

I can't seem to find that much information on her, using FreeBMD suggests that her birth-town is vastly different from her home town.
Unfortunately it seems that women are harder to track, and I observed that Alice has used Cartle and Castle as surnames.

Hello Alexander,
Thank you for asking for how to obtain more information on Alice. As I am unaware of your level of expertise, I will assume you have not checked all of the following resources. Please pardon me if you have done this and more.
First of all, have you checked all of the England and Wales Census records? The 1891 and 1901 may have more information about her and her family.
I see that you have already located her in the 1911 census:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWGL-44P
Secondly, with the information you gleaned from Free BMD, have you been able to find her birth and death in the General Register Office Index? I can see you have referenced her marriage and as the mother of John W E Merritt, 1915.

Obtaining her birth and death certificates may also give you more useful information. You may order them online, either in paper or digital form.
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/images/CG14.pdf
You may search the England and Wales National Register, 1939, held by The National Archives.
https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/1939-register/
To research her birth and residence places, you can use the FamilySearch Research Wiki. Under the home page tabs, go to Search and see the drop down menu. The bottom one is the Research Wiki.

There are other resources under the Search tab you may wish to investigate too.
I hope this information is useful for you to continue researching your family tree. If there is anything we can do to help you, please let us know.

As a first step (since none of the birth records or pre-1911 census records seem to reveal a match), I would be inclined to order a copy of her 1907 marriage certificate - which should provide the name and occupation of her father.
It is possible that her birth was not registered at Kingston, or she was born some miles from there, so knowing her father's identity would be a help in identifying her mother and movements between 1891 & 1911.

Update - I appear to have found her in the 1921 Census Index in Find My Past. Both she and John William Merritt are found living at Camberwell and Alice's birthplace is shown as CHERTSEY, about 11 miles from Kingston. Their children are found in the same household, albeit with "wrong" ages.
Alice's 1891 & 1901 census details are found at https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?treeref=GN2T-M7G&q.givenName=Alice&q.surname=Castle&q.givenName.1=Alice&q.surname.1=Cartle&q.birthLikePlace=Kingston%2C+Surrey%2C+England%2C+United+Kingdom&q.birthLikeDate.from=1884&q.birthLikeDate.to=1888&q.deathLikePlace=Camberwell%2C+London%2C+England%2C+United+Kingdom&q.deathLikeDate.from=1953&q.deathLikeDate.to=1957&q.marriageLikePlace=Walworth%2C+Southwark%2C+London%2C+England%2C+United+Kingdom&q.marriageLikeDate.from=1905&q.marriageLikeDate.to=1909, her parents appearing to be Henry and Caroline Castle. Can't find her birth registration, however.
Further update - her parents appear to be Henry John Castle and Caroline Bryer: married S 1885 Qtr St Saviour, Surrey (FreeBMD). Still can't find Alice's birth record, but brothers William & Albert found in GRO index, both showing BRYER as mother's maiden name. A sister Emily was born in 1887, but died in 1889 (events registered at St Saviour).

Dear Jill, thank you for your informative message.
For the last few months, I have been interested in family history. For some of the details my late grandparents found paper records of the Samuels surname but not necessarily of his father.
As noted by Paul W it does seem that the 1891 and 1901 England & Wales censuses have been useful in determining Alice's father's name.
Due to the cost of the certificates (around £11), I am somewhat reluctant to order a certificate, unless there are reasonable grounds (in addition, for example, the GRO could charge money for a request for a very common name).
Due to my location and interest in family history, I may also visit the 1939 register and 1921 census in Kew Gardens, London to discover and verify more records. Alternatively my nearby library offers Findmypast and/or ancestry, so I might use that to expedite some records.
The wiki has been useful additionally, especially to get some information on other family members.
Thank you for this information! I have now added that record, and now the tree automatically broadened considerably into the past.
Regards,
Alexander
